Over the last few days, I have pottered all across Astoria, Queens.
With so many restaurants, cafes, bars, delis, eating spots – it’s amazing people get ANY work done in that area. If it were upto me, I would eat and veg out all the time and the diversity in the area is truly amazing.
I hopped from a street lined with Greek stores to Steinway and Little Egypt. No halal cart food here, but smoky cafes with the smell of hookah and dates and everything African and Middle Eastern. It’s truly wonderful if your taste buds are craving something out of the ordinary.
I’ll probably have more on Astoria’s history and food later.
But because this is the holiday season and people are out emptying out their wallets – I figured it might be a good time to talk about two quirky stores in the area.
The Little Soap Shop – Lather up some Love
The Little Soap Shop in Astoria is what girls love. It’s a cute little outlet that will make you belt out your best high pitched shrieks …”Ooooh Lavender…yumm” to start shopping in a frenzy.
The store has long been a neighborhood gem and a personal favorite for many shoppers looking for something hand crafted.
Astoria native Vivian Dritsas’ products (er..soaps) are organic with all natural ingredients. You can customize a gift basket or pick up handmade soaps from this store. From Lemon Eucalyptus to Japanese Cherry Blossom and Vanilla Lavender Patchouli, the soap bars range between $5 and $7 dollars.
You can also get a slice of the Soap cake or stock up on Soap Cupcakes (Note to self: Do not put product in mouth.)
The store also stocks Bath salts, Dead Sea scrubs and delectable hand and body lotions.
