I love lists–more so when they come out just after the year-end craziness that cranks out all sorts of “Best-of, Worst-of” crap. Beloved alt-weekly Village Voice coughed up this hairball-listing some of Gotham’s best blogs. I read most of them regularly, so was more than happy to see some of my faves make it to the list. So here goes:
- The Launch Box which includes “hundreds of photos with very little commentary” about the Second Avenue Subway construction site by Ben Heckscher who happens to live nearby.
- Second Avenue Sagas, which follows the progress of the Second Avenue Subway’s construction.
If you ever take a train out of the East Side, then you know what hell it is to squeeze into the subway during rush hour. The only solution is, of course, an extra line on the UES. Even as construction is underway to build the Second Avenue line, we aren’t really holding our breaths as it is expected to be fully functional in 2016 (GASP!)
So, it’s HEAVE HO till then. For all those of you wondering what this babble is all about, please watch this wonderful one-minute educational video made by the MTA (Full disclosure: The video, incidentally was picked up after my perusal of The Launch Box).
- Art Fag City: For people who haven’t read Art Fag City, here’s an email that creator Paddy Johnson received, which ironically describes what she does.
Email title: QUICK QUESTION FROM PUBLICIST
I was wondering if you cover topics such as art galleries or art shows in NYC, and if I would be able to send you some information regarding one?
Please get back to me at your earliest convenience, thank you.
Best,

- Emdashes: Who dat, you ask? Here’s who they are. The website writes, “founded in 2004 by Emily Gordon, [Emdashes]is a place where keen and dedicated readers of The New Yorker, past and present, can find related news and commentary: about people, subjects, and ideas within the magazine, and events and conversations outside its pages.” I like their cartoons.
- Gerritsen Beach, which focuses on this “deep-Brooklyn neighborhood.”
- New York Shitty, which “features photos, spot reports, and interviews of a charmingly random sort of northernmost Brooklyn’s people, incidents, and places.”
- Food In Mouth, which posts about “discovered item[s] of street food or a recently consumed meal, then zooms off on thought-provoking tangents.”
- Ask Moxie, “a beacon of non-judgmental, un-dogmatic parenting advice.”
- Animal NY, which chronicles the “underground culture” of New York.
- The House Next Door, which focuses on area art “both high and low.”
You can read more deets about these blogs at the Voice.
