But these days, having a dog can bring strange new responsibilities–like signing the pup up to Twitter.

A new product by toy giant Mattel called “Puppy Tweets” lets the whole universe get a peek into your dog’s daily activities. The colorful little device hangs from your dog’s collar, and when it detects movement or barking it sends a message via wi-fi to your computer. The messages are translated into pre-programmed tweets and get broadcast directly via Twitter. Your pet’s twitter followers can stay up to date with the latest as he wakes, poops, and woofs.

Astoria in Queens, New York, is more than just all Greek restaurants and beer gardens.

It is also, according to The New York Times, home to 32 French Bulldogs – one of the most totally non-cute dogs I have ever laid eyes on.

With their narrow hips, rabbit years and large head, writes The Times, the dogs often have to be delivered through a c-section. But once born, they quickly endear themselves to owners by possessing one awesome New York quality – they are landlord friendly – read small, low on the barking, and can be squeezed into miniscule NYC apartments! We knew dogs were pleasers, but these fellas!

Read the whole piece here.

Ahh, wet noses, slurpy kisses! What's not to love about dogs?

This has been a particularly sappy time for dog lovers. I came across two very well written pieces on mutts, so well written, it practically made me bawl. The first, was an excerpt from Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know by Alexandra Horowitz and the second was a piece in the Washington Post, called “Why Old Dogs Are The Best Dogs.”

I don’t think summarising the pieces makes any sense, because I don’t want to take away from the brilliant writing. So follow the links and read them for yourself!
